Move and download chats

3 minute read · Chats & Local Agents

Use All chats to see every conversation across your workspaces in one list. From there you can find a chat, move it to another workspace or project, archive it or download a copy with its history and files.

Open All chats

Choose All chats in the sidebar, above Tools, or from the account menu at the bottom of the workspace rail. The window lists conversations with their workspace, project and status: Working, Archived or Ready.

  • Type in Search chats, projects or workspaces… to filter by title, project or workspace name.
  • Use All workspaces to limit the list to one workspace or to Standalone chats, and All projects for one project.
  • Turn on Archived only to find archived conversations.
  • Use Previous and Next to page through long lists, 50 chats at a time, and Refresh chats after changes on another computer.

For a quick jump to a known chat, Vortex Search is faster. To restore a conversation that is missing from the list, use chat recovery.

Move a chat to another workspace or project

Choose Move chat on a row in All chats, or Move chat… in the chat's own menu. Then choose:

Field Choice
Destination workspace Any of your workspaces, or Standalone chats.
Project scope All projects in this workspace or one project.
Chat folder A chat folder in the destination workspace, or Outside a chat folder.

The conversation keeps its history, uploaded files, generated media and unsent draft. Its attachments are copied to the destination project. The next message starts a new provider session in the destination project, using the saved history as context; it does not continue the old provider session.

If the chat is working, the move waits until the current work finishes and shows The chat will move when its current work finishes. Use Cancel move to keep it where it is. A chat cannot move into a temporary working copy, or while a Git action or a working-folder change is still in progress.

Moving a chat changes where it belongs. It does not move or copy project files. To change only the folder the next message starts in, use Chat menu → Project & worktree…; see parallel chats and worktrees.

Download a chat

Choose Download chat… in the chat menu, or the download action on a row in All chats. Vortex asks where to save a ZIP archive containing:

  • conversation.md, a readable transcript;
  • conversation.json, the conversation, tool results and draft in Vortex's chat format;
  • attachments/, the conversation's files;
  • manifest.json, listing each file with its size and SHA-256 checksum.

The archive does not include the project's source code or your account credentials. It is not encrypted: anyone with the file can read the conversation and its attachments. Store or share it as you would the original files, and remove secrets first.

Archive or restore

Use Archive chat to hide a finished conversation from the sidebar while keeping its history, and Unarchive chat to bring it back. Archiving does not delete files or stop a run on another computer. Permanent deletion is a separate action in the chat menu; see storage and deletion.
